2 Kings 14

1 In the second year of Yoash son of Yehoachaz king of Yisrael reigned Amatsyah the son of Yoash king of Judah (Yehudah).

2 He was twenty and five years old when he began to reign, and reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem (Yerushalayim). His mother’s name was Yehoaddan of Jerusalem (Yerushalayim).

3 And he did that which was right in the sight of יהוה, yet not like Dawid his father; he did according to all things as Yoash his father did.

4 Howbeit the high places were not taken away; as yet the people did sacrifice and burnt incense on the high places.

5 And it came to pass, as soon as the kingdom was confirmed in his hand, that he slew his servants who had slain the king his father.

6 But the children of the murderers he slew not, according unto that which is written in the Book of the Torah by Moses (Mosheh), wherein יהוה commanded, saying, “The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, nor the children be put to death for the fathers; but every man shall be put to death for his own sin.”

7 He slew of Edom in the valley of salt ten thousand, and took Selah by war, and called the name of it Yokteel unto this day.

8 Then Amatsyah sent messengers to Yehoash, the son of Yehoachaz son of Yehu, king of Yisrael, saying, “Come, let us have it out face-to-face.”

9 And Yehoash the king of Yisrael sent to Amatsyah king of Judah (Yehudah), saying, “The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, ‘Give your daughter to my son as wife’; and there passed by a wild beast that was in Lebanon, and trode down the thistle.

10 You have indeed smitten Edom, and your heart hath lifted you up. Glory of this, and tarry at home; for why shouldest you meddle to your hurt, that you shouldest fall, even you, and Judah (Yehudah) with you?”

11 But Amatsyah would not hear. Therefore Yehoash king of Yisrael went up; and he and Amatsyah king of Judah (Yehudah) have it out face-to-face at Beit-Shemesh, which belongeth to Judah (Yehudah).

12 And Judah (Yehudah) was put to the worse before Yisrael; and they fled every man to their tents.

13 And Yehoash king of Yisrael took Amatsyah king of Judah (Yehudah), the son of Yehoash the son of Achazyah, at Beit-Shemesh, and came to Jerusalem (Yerushalayim), and broke down the wall of Jerusalem (Yerushalayim) from the gate of Efrayim unto the corner gate, four hundred cubits.

14 And he took all the gold and silver, and all the vessels that were found in the house of יהוה, and in the treasures of the king’s house, and hostages, and returned to Samaria (Shomeron).

15 Now the rest of the acts of Yehoash which he did, and his might, and how he fought with Amatsyah king of Judah (Yehudah), are they not written in the book of the Chronicles of the kings of Yisrael?

16 And Yehoash slept with his fathers, and was buried in Samaria (Shomeron) with the kings of Yisrael; and Yarovam his son reigned in his stead.

17 And Amatsyah the son of Yoash king of Judah (Yehudah) lived after the death of Yehoash son of Yehoachaz king of Yisrael fifteen years.

18 And the rest of the acts of Amatsyah, are they not written in the book of the Chronicles of the kings of Judah (Yehudah)?

19 Now they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem (Yerushalayim); and he fled to Lachish; but they sent after him to Lachish, and slew him there.

20 And they brought him on horses; and he was buried at Jerusalem (Yerushalayim) with his fathers in the city of Dawid.

21 And all the people of Judah (Yehudah) took Azaryah, who was sixteen years old, and made him king instead of his father Amatsyah.

22 He built Elath, and restored it to Judah (Yehudah), after that the king slept with his fathers.

23 In the fifteenth year of Amatsyah the son of Yoash king of Judah (Yehudah) Jeroboam (Yarovam) the son of Yoash king of Yisrael began to reign in Samaria (Shomeron), and reigned forty and one years.

24 And he did that which was evil in the sight of יהוה; he departed not from all the sins of Jeroboam (Yarovam) the son of Nevat, who made Yisrael to sin.

25 He restored the coast of Yisrael from the entering of Hamath unto the sea of the plain, according to the word of יהוה God of Israel (Elohei Yisrael), which He spake by the hand of His servant Yonah, the son of Amittai, the prophet, who was of Gathhepher.

26 For יהוה saw the affliction of Yisrael, that it was very bitter; for there was not any shut up, nor any free, nor any helper for Yisrael.

27 And יהוה said not that He would blot out the name of Yisrael from under heaven; but He saved them by the hand of Jeroboam (Yarovam) the son of Yoash.

28 Now the rest of the acts of Jeroboam (Yarovam), and all that he did, and his might, how he warred, and how he recovered Damascus (Dammeseq), and Hamath, which belonged to Judah (Yehudah), for Yisrael, are they not written in the book of the Chronicles of the kings of Yisrael?

29 And Jeroboam (Yarovam) slept with his fathers, even with the kings of Yisrael; and Zekharyah his son reigned in his stead.
