And these are the countries which the children of Yisrael inherited in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest (kohen), and Joshua (Yehoshua) the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Yisrael, distributed for inheritance to them.
By lot was their inheritance, as יהוה commanded by the hand of Moses (Mosheh), for the nine tribes, and for the half tribe.
For Moses (Mosheh) had given the inheritance of two tribes and a half tribe on the other side Jordan (Yarden); but unto the Levites (Lewiyim) he gave none inheritance among them.
For the children of Joseph (Yosef) were two tribes, Menashsheh and Efrayim; therefore they gave no part unto the Levites (Lewiyim) in the land, save cities to dwell in, with their suburbs for their cattle and for their substance.
As יהוה commanded Moses (Mosheh), so the children of Yisrael did, and they divided the land.
Then the children of Judah (Yehudah) came unto Joshua (Yehoshua) in Gilgal; and Caleb the son of Yefunneh the Kenezite said unto him, “You knowest the thing that יהוה said unto Moses (Mosheh) the man of God (Elohim) concerning me and you in Qadesh Barnea.
Forty years old was I when Moses (Mosheh) the servant of יהוה sent me from Qadesh Barnea to espy out the land; and I brought him word again as it was in mine heart.
Nevertheless my brethren that went up with me made the heart of the people melt; but I wholly followed יהוה my God (Elohim).
And Moses (Mosheh) sware on that day, saying, ‘Surely the land whereon your feet have trodden shall be your inheritance, and your children’s forever, because you have wholly followed יהוה my God (Elohim).’
And now, behold, יהוה hath kept me alive, as He said, these forty and five years, even since יהוה spake this word unto Moses (Mosheh), while the children of Yisrael wandered in the wilderness; and now, behold, I am this day fourscore (eighty) and five years old.
As yet I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses (Mosheh) sent me: as my strength was then, even so is my strength now, for war, both to go out, and to come in.
Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof יהוה spake in that day; for you heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and fenced; if so be יהוה will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as יהוה said.
And Joshua (Yehoshua) blessed him, and gave unto Caleb the son of Yefunneh Hebron for an inheritance.
Hebron therefore became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Yefunneh the Kenezite unto this day, because that he wholly followed יהוה God of Israel (Elohei Yisrael).
And the name of Hebron before was Qiryat-Arba; which Arba was a great man among the Anakims. And the land had rest from war.
